Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell

Some 1984 spoilers in this post.

Read a good chunk of Nineteen Eighty-Four last night but didn't manage to finish it. The story has definitely become more interesting once Winston was captured and taken to the Ministry of Love. I'm loving the torture and brainwashing stuff going on.

OK, that kinda makes me sound like a psycho lol...What I mean is it's interesting and at the same time terrifying how the government is completely breaking people's minds, bodies, and spirits to make them conform. And what's even more horrific is that once these people are completely crushed and don't even physically or mentally resemble their former selves, they get killed. How horrible would that be, to spend the last weeks or months of your life being tortured in every way possible AND knowing that you're going to die soon too. I think the mind games would be worse than the bodily harm, to be honest. The scene where O'Brien is trying to make Winston believe that four is actually five, and seeing Winston's struggle with accepting a whole new reality that is the complete opposite of what he knew and understood all his life...It was pretty scary to read, and I almost felt like I was Winston for a moment, because I think I would have reacted in the exact same way.

I'm almost done with this book and I'm excited to see how it ends. I'm kind of hoping that it's not a happy ending. I'm glad the book got better...There were actually a few times I considered quitting it, but I'm happy now that I didn't!
